Our Executive Search specialist Simon Burke talks about his unique position in the world of recruitment.

Tell us about your role at ON:iT

As an Executive Search specialist, I build valuable relationships with senior executives and help them to achieve their long-term career goals. Together, we look at where they’re at now, where they want to be, and how they can get to this point.

Every day I have conversations with people who tell me about jobs that are discussed around boardroom tables. My role doesn’t concern firing CVs everywhere, it involves finding top positions that fall in line with the candidate’s criteria. It’s as much of a business development role as it is a senior appointments role.

What makes your specialist area unique?

Being relational, knowledgeable and there for the long-term. I don’t focus on quick fixes. For me, it’s about the long game – jobs that might be available 3-6 months from now. However, when vacancies do arise, I usually have someone in mind to fill them.

What makes ON:iT different?

I’ve worked with Chris and Rich before. I know they’re driven, motivated and going about things the right way. They look after people who work for them and with them, always placing emphasis on getting the best tools and facilities.

Their approach is refreshing – and they provide a new style of working that everyone talks about but never actually does.

Where do you see the IT sector heading in the coming years?

Data science will continue to become a daily term rather than a specialist one, and we’ll also see AI coming into play. There’s going to be a lot more movement in smart technology. I’ve worked in IT for 20 years. It used to be about building databases; now it’s about developing real-life solutions.

When you’re not at work, what do you get up to?

I live in Frodsham with my partner and we’ve got two kids – Summer who’s 12, and Harrison who’s 8 – so they keep us quite busy! I’m a huge fan of Formula One racing, and my mission is get to every track over the world. I’ve been to quite a few already, and I’ve also been lucky enough to meet some of the drivers!
