Gary GoldsmithAnyone involved in recruitment knows Gary Goldsmith. That’s why we weren’t surprised to see a huge surge of interest when the award-winning advisor announced his new role of ‘ON:iT NED’ on LinkedIn.

We appointed Gary, a hugely influential industry figure and founder of the Recruitment Directors Lunch Club, earlier this month. As our company enters the next stage of growth, the timing seemed right to bring in someone who can amplify what we do.

In this SWiTCHED:ON feature, we ask our new Non-Executive Director a few questions about his decision to join ON:iT Recruitment

Why did the role of Non-Executive Director at ON:iT appeal to you?

The guys came to an RDLC open day a while back to see what it was all about. We had a real affinity and spent that evening in a pub until closing time putting the world to rights. They’ve been members of The Pirates ever since.

Chris and Rich recently got in touch for advice about reengineering ON:iT during their expansion. I offered a few suggestions which went down brilliantly, so they invited me to join their board. We had a chat, they bought me a steak, and I signed up!

We’ve been working together for a few months already – this is essentially formalising the relationship.

What’s the benefit of having a Non-Executive Director?

Every business should have an advisor to help them get their vision, drive and priorities in order. It’s important to choose the right person to be on your board especially if you’ve got ambitions to scale like ON:iT do.

We’re currently going through the biggest time of change there’s ever been in recruitment. Whilst lots of businesses are investing in tech, they’re not always investing in themselves.

Having a Non-Exec shows brands how to do that. When a NED appointment is done properly, it can be worth its weight in gold.

What are your objectives as Non-Executive Director of ON:iT?

ON:iT are a powerhouse of a business with some really creative ideas. They have the ambition and attitude to deliver. Now, it’s about getting the best out of them – helping them gain market share and shareholder values whilst staying true to their ethos.

I’ll be supporting ON:iT to do the right things at the right time and scale out correctly. I’ll help them strategically plan and align their operations, to put them on a healthy trajectory. This will cover brand, marketing, internal fulfilment and more.

My job is to amplify what ON:iT are currently doing – encouraging the hunger they already have inside them to operate faster and go further. All I’ll be doing is giving the necessary advice along the way.
