Flexible working is one of the best ways to attract top-quality candidates, and it holds so many benefits for companies too.

Flexible working used to be a rare luxury. But in today’s working environment, it’s become one of the most appealing benefits a company can offer.

As an ice hockey player for Manchester Storm, I spend a lot of time training and playing in competitive matches, so flexible working is particularly beneficial for me. Having the freedom to work in a more fluid way offers advantages for all kinds of people – as well as businesses themselves.

There’s no underestimating the importance of flexibility nowadays. Here are a few of the main reasons why.

Get the most out of your team

Just because 9-5 is the norm, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the way to go. The right shift patterns are the ones where employees can be most productive and offer their best work. And it doesn’t have to be a sacrifice. Tech has come on a long way, so we have the tools now to do work from other places as well as the office.

Flexible working can help you get the most out of your team. I live in Altrincham, for example, and if there’s something that needs doing quickly first thing in the morning, I can do it from home immediately. Without flexible working, I’d waste an hour getting into Manchester before I could even make a start.

It’s all about offering the proper tools to staff. This way, they can complete tasks to a high standard no matter where they might be.

Never risk ruling out ideal candidates

There’s always the possibility that a candidate can’t fit in with the standard 9-5. They might have family obligations or other commitments which means working a conventional day isn’t ideal… but they could still have all the attributes the position demands.

With flexible working in place, you always have room for people who are ideal for the job. If you stick to core hours, you can stop yourself from hiring a really good candidate.

Offering more ways to work opens up the talent pool and immediately makes your business more appealing to a wider group of highly capable people.

Give everyone options

Not everyone likes to work outside of the normal 9-5 window; some people enjoy the routine. But the point is that flexible working gives staff – and the company – more options. It also takes a bit of unnecessary stress away from employees. Instead of worrying about their delayed tram, they can turn up five or ten minutes later and make it up at the end of the day instead.

Flexible working is a huge part of the environment at ON:iT Recruitment, and it’s a big reason as to why we have such a great atmosphere in the office.
